What Does It Mean?
And Can “I” Do It?
I bet, that those of you who are not familiar with the term “Decorative Painting” is saying right now to yourself, “I would never be able to do that!”. Well, I’m here to tell you you’re wrong!
Decorative Painting is an art form in which you need no prior experience in drawing or art. If you have a desire to learn, and are willing to learn the basics and then practice, you can learn to paint. If you decide to take a Decorative Painting Class, you will be working with a pattern and will be taught techniques in a very systematic way, which makes it very fun, relaxing and an easy learning experience. Let me tell you, personally, I can barely draw a stick man, but I can still paint and love it.
Some would say that there is a fine line between decorative arts and fine arts. The separation of the decorative arts from the fine arts is a modern distinction. Some distinguish between decorative and fine art based on functionality, intended purpose, importance, status as a unique creation, or single-artist production.
Here is a bit of history on Decorative Painting. While it’s almost impossible to know the exact origins, decorative painting can be traced back several centuries to Europe.
Some of these artists, in Europe, became grand masters and were extremely skilled in their craft. Their services were only available to the rich.
However, before long, others were attempting to imitate these skills and painted on walls, furniture and just about anything in a more simplistic & charming ways.
It wasn’t long before some of these pieces made it to North America, and in no time at all, this style of painting spread by way of internet, painters and peddlers.
Today, we can all enjoy this form of painting because combining traditional techniques, from the grand masters, with new techniques we can produce effects that are only limited by our imaginations!!

How Long Should It Take You To Finish a Painting?
How long a painting should take you to do is impossible to say. It depends on every individual artist, their technical painting skills, and what they visualize the painting to be.
Some famous artists have taken months and even years to finish a painting. The 19th century French artist Ernest Meissonier took 13 years to finish his painting ‘Napolean’s victory at Friedland” which is 53 ½ X 95 ½ inches in size.
If you fuss with a painting for too long, you run the risk of over working it. If you declare a painting finished too soon, you run the risk of not developing the idea to its full potential. If in doubt about whether you should stop or continue with a particular painting, walk away from it for a couple of days and then go back and look at it again with fresh eyes. Now how do you feel about it?
I like looking at my piece in a mirror, as if you were looking at yourself, but look at the painting. Then turn the painting upside down, usually if something needs to be tweeked or added, it will jump out at you.
Ultimately, it’s not about how long a painting takes, but about how pleased you are with the result.
